Mothlight (1963)
Seemingly at random, the wings and other bits of moths and insects move rapidly across the screen. Most are brown or sepia; up close, we can see patterns within wings, similar to the veins in a leaf. Sometimes the images look like paper cutouts, like Matisse. Green objects occasionally appear. Most wings are translucent. The technique makes them appear to be stuck directly to the film.

One of the most brilliant experimental films ever made, Brakhage's Mothlight plays the ultimate reversal; moths killed by their attraction to the light are reanimated on screen, given life again in the world of cinema and in a sense, Brakhage lives on through this film.

This 4 minute film was made without a camera. Brakhage literally pasted twigs, leaves and the wings of dead moths onto the film and printed it. With his fingernails, he scratched his name onto a few feet of film, resulting in his signatured, literally scratched into the film. What I liked about it is how creative and unique his approach was. I don't think he's the only one to make a short film without a camera but still, what a way to experiment. The end result is a barrage of sometimes barely decipherable messes of foliage and insect wings. Very interesting and experimental.

Under ten minutes of film + bits of natural flotsom and jetsom + light projection = absolutely breathtaking filmmaking.

One of the strangest and most surreal of Brakhage's short films found him literally attaching moth wings to his work print to achieve an effect that, in all likelihood, is exactly as you imagine it. By modern standards it may seem fairly trivial, but it's hard to imagine the canon of American experimental films existing without it.
