Morris from America (2016)

13-year-old Morris Gentry has just relocated with his single father, Curtis to Heidelberg, Germany. Morris, who fancies himself the next Notorious B.I.G., is a complete fish-out-of-water—a budding hip-hop star in an EDM world. To complicate matters further, Morris quickly falls hard for his cool, rebellious, 15-year-old classmate Katrin. Morris sets out against all odds to take the hip-hop world by storm and win the girl of his dreams.

Morris From America breekt niet nieuw grond op het coming-of-age genre, maar weet wel iets unieks ermee te doen door er iets mee te doen dan niet leunt op voorspelbare plotwendingen en onsympathieke personages.

Markees Christmas is an appealing, sensitive find as Morris, with Robinson striking all the rights notes as his struggling father.

Jordan Raup 19 Feb 2016

A culturally specific story is being told, but the film’s familiar structure helps to add a commonality for any viewer.

Sam Fragoso 23 Jan 2016

Focused on fetishizing rather than intimately depicting, director Chad Hartigan has produced a warm-hearted yarn that treats its two African-American leading men like props in his white-washed game of chess.

Jesse Cataldo 14 Aug 2016

Chad Hartigan's film is especially perceptive about the effect of external influence on personal development.
