13-year-old Morris Gentry has just relocated with his single father, Curtis to Heidelberg, Germany. Morris, who fancies himself the next Notorious B.I.G., is a complete fish-out-of-water—a budding hip-hop star in an EDM world. To complicate matters further, Morris quickly falls hard for his cool, rebellious, 15-year-old classmate Katrin. Morris sets out against all odds to take the hip-hop world by storm and win the girl of his dreams.

Unfortunately, with only the exception of the language barrier, writer/director Chad Hartigan introduces one cliché after another, without supplying insight or anything new to racist, sexist attitudes too familiar here.

This was a mixed film. It was full of some film tropes that I am not a big fan of but also had some fantastic scenes. Setting it in Germany was enough of a gimmick to prevent it from being stale.

Morris From America is a sweet movie, but it doesn’t take us anywhere new. Its sincerity is admirable, but if Hartigan had dug a little deeper he could’ve captured something distinct and special.
