An interesting, heart warming movie about the struggle of some African women to escape the traditional ritual purification ceremony imposed on their daughters by the male population of the village. Recommended as insightful about tradional Islamic village lifestyles in African villages.

In a small village in Africa, a woman stands up to tribal traditions by harboring 4 girls in her house who refuse to partake in "purification' - a mandatory ritual for all women to become married. She uses the tribes own superstitions against them by summoning a 'moolaade,' a spirit who will protect the children from the tribals entering her house. Furthermore, the tribe chief's cosmopolitan son is set to marry the same woman's daughter, only to find out she is a balikoro (unpurified). A foreign street is also there to pass judgment on the whole situation in this fascinating watch.

While the film could use some trimmimg, this may be one of the most important films to ever come out of Africa. It comfronts the terrible practice of circumcision on the young girls in a small village. A woman in the town takes a stand against this disgusting practice, that often kills the girls, and she must contend with centuries of tradition and the hypocracy of the male leaders in the town. It is an interesting examination of a culture that is far different than our own. Not easy to watch, but it is a film that more people should see.
