Sembene's narrative film isn't art as much as it is a cry, the distant ululation of the ancestors, a plea for a return to African-ness and an undivided spirituality.

A masterpiece. Semebene manages to balance the heavy-handed subject matter and poignency of the story. I enjoyed the film on an emotional and intellectual level.

Really fine film and beautiful images. I am also sadden he died the other day at 84. Take a look at this African filmmakers view of the continent of Africa as compared to most American stereotyped images of the continent's poverty.

While the film could use some trimmimg, this may be one of the most important films to ever come out of Africa. It comfronts the terrible practice of circumcision on the young girls in a small village. A woman in the town takes a stand against this disgusting practice, that often kills the girls, and she must contend with centuries of tradition and the hypocracy of the male leaders in the town. It is an interesting examination of a culture that is far different than our own. Not easy to watch, but it is a film that more people should see.

Very well made film with a complex and excellently well crafted narrative. We feel the struggle and the difficulty of fighting a well encroatched tradition. With little girls involved, the suspense is maintained throughout, more efficiently than any large budget feature. Knowing that these events were depicting something real and realistically, it is even more gut wrenching. The film expose well the problematic of societal changes, by which I mean the view points of all sides are well exposed and understood. The film was the base for increased discussions with the goal of eradicating the pratice. I hope this is accomplished now.
