Mississippi Masala (1991)

Years after her Indian family was forced to flee their Uganda home, twentysomething Mina finds herself co-operating a motel in the faraway land of Mississippi. Interesting diasporic connections . . . but the love story didn't really get off the ground except as a plot device--it kind of remained shallow. Still, worth watching.

Uncommonly perceptive about the complexities of brown/black courtship, which I honestly have never even seen in another film. Mira Nair, as usual, directs with sensual flair and perhaps if anything, is overgenerous is providing not only a mature romance with discussion of race issues, an immigrant story, and practically enough material to make a totally different prequel about the political history of Uganda. And if I'm making it sound all too academic, did I mention in between her usual cross-cultural examination, Nair somehow got Denzel Washington to do a sexy shirtless scene?

An enjoyable movie. I enjoyed the Indian girl but as always, Denzel was The Man!

Some early work from Denzel...surprising they made such kind of movie in the early 90s. Need more of that right now.. Real interesting movie about inter-racial relationships. Portrays Indian Culture and Afro-America culture with a mix of Uganda!

Mississippi Masala is a film about a an indian family who were kicked out of Uganda. They moved all around the world and finally land up in Mississippi. Time passes and the indian daughter Mina falls in a love with a black man. Mina's family does not approve. It's a very interesting story. Denzel Washington was amazing as always even 20 years ago. The ending for me was unexpected but powerful in my opinion. I don't think the movie would have been as good if it ended with a mushy love scene or something like that.
