Several friends travel to Sweden to study as anthropologists a summer festival that is held every ninety years in the remote hometown of one of them. What begins as a dream vacation in a place where the sun never sets, gradually turns into a dark nightmare as the mysterious inhabitants invite them to participate in their disturbing festive activities.

The film was very original and gorgeous visually. I enjoyed the subtle details within most shots. That being said, the story could've used more focus to support the stylized film. There should've been a clearer and deeper progression of Dani's arc in order to make her final decision more impactful as a moment. AND/OR there should've been a deeper dive into the culture of this Scandinavian society by expanding on the meaning of this grand ceremony and focusing on the idea of life-cycles which drive these people to murder and mutilate their guests. By cutting some of the unnecessary scenes addressing the dynamic of Christian's friend group there would be room to expand on Dani and this twisted, but somehow, beautiful culture; sharpening the focus of the film. I am all for having the audience make connections and inferences, but I felt as though we had to guess about too many things.

Like Hereditary, Midsommar functions as an outlandish imagining of the effects of personal trauma, especially for someone who already struggles with an unsteady mind. Yet the psychology and the horror aren’t quite as holistically handled this time around.

Scary in such an interesting way. Made me feel like I was on drugs myself a few times. Just an incredible cult movie done better than any I've seen. Also, Florence is absolutely amazing in every single thing she does. This just proves it even more. She is the best part of this movie.

They should have added more items to the Rated-R warnings: “Massive Head Wounds, Dead Skin Mask, Forcible Bear Suit, Unconventinal Suicide (or murder) Machines.” I tend to agree with Mick LaSalle at the Chronicle – it’s really brilliant stuff, with incredibly beautiful shots, but it’s got some of the most twisted content I think I’ve ever seen. This is one of those films that if you happen to see before you’re a teenager, you’ll probably be screwed up for years. I mean, gore is one thing, but repeatedly showing you close-up gore without any notice – so you can’t avoid it – is a little cruel. All that being said, this Ari Astor sure loves his cult movies. And he ties them into the banalities of western civilization in really creative ways. Wow, that was a whopper. My open question is whether the Swedish guy who was responsible for “recruiting” the outsiders for the festival actually killed the main characters family, or whether he was simply opportunistic in reacting to the deaths.

While "Hereditary" crashed and burned in its final act, Midsommar stays afloat, although the movie is ultimately hampered by a too-long running length (147 minutes) and scenes that teeter perilously close to slipping over a cliff into self-parody.
