Midsommar (2019)

Several friends travel to Sweden to study as anthropologists a summer festival that is held every ninety years in the remote hometown of one of them. The spell that it casts is bright, dreamy and absorbing, but it is also in no particular hurry to come into focus, which makes its aftereffects all the harder to shake.

I found this movie frustrating to watch and VERY long. It is certainly not a horror film, but rather a kind of quasi-religious experiment. The actors did a fine job with what little they had to work with, but the lack of clarity (not necessarily a bad thing in a movie) was irritating. Ari Aster telegraphed right from the start that things were not going to end well, but the problem was I didn’t really care about the characters and kept trying to guess if I was watching some kind of sociological experiment gone wrong or just a failed film. I kept hoping the film would get better (or shorter). It didn’t. It just ended to everyone’s relief.

Thought it was a perfect, surreal and tense movie. The movie does a great job of eliciting responses from the viewer - namely anxiety. Could really identify with some of the more psychedelic moments of the film in a way that couldn’t be done in other films with similar themes.

A very well written-directed movie by the director, Ari Aster. It's a very strange movie that you might not make sense until the very end of it. There are so many little details in the production design that the audience has to pay attention to in order to fully understand the movie. The cinematography in this film is very beautiful and strange at times. The audience might notice that some scenes might be a little over-exposed. The style of the cinematography fits the story well. The music for this film is amazing. The Haxan Cloak did an amazing job of scoring this film. Going into this movie the audience may not know about the main actress, Florence Pugh, but after the movie end, the audience will want to see her in more films. She did an amazing job of playing Dani in this movie. Overall, there isn't much to dislike about this movie. It's suspenseful, thrilling, funny a few times, and strangely scary.

Clocking in at a bloated 2 hours and 20 minutes and featuring a VERY slow build before we get to the good stuff, the gorgeous and weird and ludicrous horror film “Midsommar” tests our patience more than once before delivering some seriously grisly and wonderfully twisted material in the final act.
