Miami Vice (2006)

A case involving drug lords and murder in South Florida takes a personal turn for undercover detectives Sonny Crockett and Ricardo Tubbs. Ein Film, den ich auch bei der zweiten Sichtung nie so richtig in den Griff bekommen habe. LÃ¤sst sich nicht so widerstandslos konzeptualisieren wie noch der (umwerfende) COLLATERAL, funktioniert vielleicht vor allem und auch als Antithese zu diesem. (Das Geschlossene -> das Offene). Vielleicht, weit aus dem Fenster gelehnt, Manns Meisterwerk?

I've noticed that virtually all of the well-known, top movie critics love this movie, including Peter Travers from Rolling Stone. Meanwhile, the second-rate movie critics do not like it. Miami Vice is an outstanding movie. The more often I watch it, the more I like it. The acting performances are excellent across the board and Mann does a superb job capturing the palpable tension on the screen and the dangers faced by Crockett (Farrell) and Rico (Foxx). The gunfight at the end of the movie is mesmerizing. The New York Times voted it one of the top 50 movies so far of the 21st century, for crying out loud. I would put Miami Vice in the top 20, that's how excellent it is.

Michael Mann does well with mysterious characters in simple plots, so there is a lot left to mull over after the credits roll in Miami Vice. As usual for Mann, the visual complexity of the film matches and enhances that of the story--the story of those choices people must make while clamped in the vice of a dark, uncertain world. I found myself very involved with the characters, whether in disgust and terror or admiration and sympathy, and I really, really enjoyed this film.

Director Michael Mann updates his iconic 1980's TV show about a pair of vice cops, played in the film by Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx, who go deep undercover. The result is a slick and stylish, yet very gritty crime thriller that is, in many ways, superior to the original TV series.

After the series in the 80's, only Michael Mann could direct such a brilliant movie with Crockett and Tubbs of the XXI'st century.
