While the plot was fairly simplistic, one overlooks this shortcoming in favour of the sublime editing, cinematography and the extremely beautiful locales. The acting is pretty melodramatic too, but the director employs the technique very, very well; As a result, the actors never seem annoyingly cloy, despite modern tastes. An excellent silent film

Brilliant film. It's a shame this film's creative, frenetic directing/editing didn't permeate mainstream film culture... this is a melodramatic story but told in an exclusively visual fashion that transcends the simple information-relaying of most directing and enters the realm of high art.

Ground breaking silent era film. The excellent use of montage communicates the inner feelings of the characters, without having to resort to intertitles. The subject matter is also intense, or at least it was for the time.
