Jason Statham returns with a new cast to continue the quest for understanding the giant prehistoric sharks, called meglodons. This venture involves a dull, dark deep dive into the "trench," then several struggles to survive, most of which are predictable. Once they get back to a beach with tourists, the watery disaster begins. This segment of destructive mayhem offers the most fun until Statham "morphed into an everyman superhero, defying odds that can only be accomplished through movie effects." That's from my review of the original, but still applies. The incredulity of the plot and holes in the logic provide plenty of eye-rolling. Much of the action is average, but for "someone who enjoys a predictable popcorn escape, this one will keep you entertained." Again, a quote from my orig review.

Meg 2 is confident in its schlock, piling on one ridiculous conceit after another at such a pace that the audience can’t help but be swept up in it. That is a harder needle to thread than many filmmakers seem to think—it’s not enough to just be stupid.

Ben Wheatley's blockbuster debut reduces him to an anonymous bystander in a sequel that's inexplicably weaker than its predecessor. If we get 'Meg 3,' then somebody needs to remember these things are supposed to be fun.

The sequel alternately treads water and splashes around frantically in search of an identity. Never settling on whether he wants his film to be Alien, Jaws, Jurassic Park or Sharknado, Wheatley serves up a bouillabaisse of all four.

Not nearly as good as the first one because they didn't show enough of the Megs. Too much time spent on a human vs. human conflict and not enough on the sharks that we all came to see. This is co-financed by a Chinese production company so it is has Chinese actors with major roles. The Chinese guy's English was hard to understand with a thick accent. The girl was just very annoying. Also, this 14 year old girl was apparently the little girl from the first movie where she was probably around 5. So 9 years should have passed, but in the film it was implied that only 3 years passed. Also it was implied that Jonas had a romantic relationship with the girls mother, but it doesn't explain how she died. Not that it was important, but still. I would wait for this to come on bluray or a streaming service, not worth seeing in the theater.
