Is it allegorical? I don't know. Is there some deeper meaning? Probably, but depth is relative. I watched this movie with my sons, 7 and 10 years old, and it kept all of our interests. We talked a little about journeys, about how some things change and how some things don't. We discussed what could be happening when there was no reliable way to know what was happening. What was the "indian" saying, was he praying or cursing, afraid or bored? We all had different thoughts on the matter. And the ending.. was it the end? Water.. or indians? The tree? Life? Death? Where are we going? Is that really gold? Does it really matter? Are they laughing or crying?

My other review was bullshit. Great movie. God-fearing characters who rely on certainty in a barren place.

Thanks to brilliant directorial decisions matched by a cast that was clearly inspired by this unique effort, this will surely be one of the most memorable films of 2011.

While I would love to fully appreciate this circular, feminist, counter-cinema perspective, no payoff makes for an audience that feels cheated.

Meek's Cutoff was fantastic. It's a bit like a feminist marriage between John Ford and Monte Hellman's The Shooting. In other words, it's a grim and bleak Existentialist Western. I can't wait to watch it again.
