Margaret's Museum (1995)

In a town where half the men die down the coalpit, Margaret MacNeil is quite happy being single in her small Cape Breton island town. It tackles some very important subjects and themes, Russell & Bonham Carter do a great job together and the filml even carries a very witty (and sometimes dark) sense of humour. The problem is that despite opening on the ending the story lacks any sort of direction.

I love this movie!! Helena Bonham Carter is so awesome! A great story. Very sad. What an ending!!! My grandfather died of lung problems after working in coal mines in Scotland.

Got to love movies so close to my home turf. The hardened life of the people and the hope they cling to and strive for really brings out the humanity in the people in this film. A must to see for anyone who lives in the maritimes or knows about the mining industry.

re: alex bauer and jean harris- maybe people who can spell "genitalia" and "judgmental" correctly have a higher statistical chance of understanding the deeply involved concepts of the movie. This is a rich, fascinating, intellectually stimulating, important era movie to see. Even if you don't "like" it, anyone with half a brain should at least be able to appreciate it.

I loved this movie, for some reason. Helena Bonham Carter gives a great performance. Stark, bleak, and depressing, like all good Canadian film/fiction/whatever.
