Manito (2002)

Fifteen years ago, their Washington Heights neighborhood was dubbed the crack-cocaine capital of the world, but today it is transforming into one of the most vibrant, Spanish-speaking communities in the United States. While the drug dealers continue to disappear, their violent legacy still casts a shadow over the neighborhood and its residents. Junior, an ex-convict struggling to get his life back on track, is a product of this legacy. His younger brother Manny, the salutatorian of his high school class, embodies the hope of the future.

It was OK but not as good as I hoped it would be

Awesome! Sad, real, raw, moving = perfect choice for erica :)

Eric D. Snider 17 Sep 2002

So vividly written and filmed that you can practically smell the mean streets on which it takes place.

Patrick Z. McGavin 11 Jun 2003

The film recalls Martin Scorsese's "Mean Streets" and the minimalism of films such as Lars Von Trier's "The Idiots." Eason and cinematographer Didier Gertsch keep the cameras tight on the actors' bodies and faces, creating palpable unease.

Bob Campbell 19 Jun 2003

Ragged but intense, this compassionate little movie is stocked with enough skillful touches and sensitive moments to stir interest in Eason's future work.
