Man of Aran (1934)

A documentary on the life of the people of the Aran Islands, who were believed to contain the essence of the ancient Irish life, represented by a pure uncorrupted peasant existence centred around the struggle between man and his hostile but magnificent surroundings. A blend of documentary and fictional narrative, the film captures the everyday trials of life on Ireland's unforgiving Aran Islands.

Not a great film because filmmaker Robert Flaherty does not seem to understand fiction.

Robert Flaherty's film of life in an Irish fishing community owes less to the real lives of the villagers than Flaherty's own sense of drama and storytelling. It's about as real as The Office but is an engrossing series of set-pieces where Flaherty films in a never ending sea of tension by putting the protagonists in various dangerous situations set against the tempestuous wind and sea that is the master of these people's lives. A seeming influence to Herzog all those years later, this really is a sort of cinematic shock from a director as visionary as Welles and stubborn as Von Sternberg. A must see.

What an amazing film, thoroughly engrossing, absolutely fascinating. What intersting people and their incredible will to survive. A truly great classic. A must see. Wonderful.

This film deserves appreciation and support more for its intention than for its achievement.

Flaherty made Man of Aran less a window into Aran life in the 20th Century than his interpretation of a state of rugged grace that romantic writers such as W.B. Yeats and William Synge projected onto the 19th Century.
