Aliens!!! There were several ways which I thought they might use to bring a mammoth back into present day, a crazed scientist using DNA, a frozen mammoth defrosting, but I never expected a UFO crashing into a museum carrying an alien that possesses the corpse of the mammoth which then goes on a rampage sucking the life force out of people using it's trunk. I should've known. Not a bad film really, certainly not one to be taken seriously and with a couple of good funny moments. Perhaps they should have made it less silly at times, or make the film more of a comedy as it seems to be trapped in limbo. Whatever was Tom Skerritt thinking? There are some good special effects in the film, but unfortunately none are mammoth related. Fairly crap, but does get extra points just for the sheer craziness of it all. "Dear God" "God is for Sunday Frank, today we pray to Nike. Run!"

Ok, I know this is not really supposed to be taken seriously, but still... jeez!

Mammoth bears the perhaps unfortunate pedigree of being a Sci Fi channel original film. However, I was pleasently surprised with the resulting film. I will openly admit that my only real reason for wanting to see this was to see Summer Glau in something I haven't seen yet. The story is far-fetched, but is alright for a sci fi film, and it moves along quite quickly. The writing is better than I expected, with some clever dialogue mixed in with the bland. The cast is hit and miss. Vincent Ventresca, Summer Glau and Tom Skerritt all give entertaining performances which are somewhat uneven, but good overall. The rest of the cast is pretty all over the place, usually at the bad end of the spectrum. The worst part of the film is the shoddy visual effects, while being decent for a tv movie, are painfully fake. Thankfully we don't see too much of the title creature. Despite some logical inconsistancies and general campyness, I enjoyed the movie for what it was. And for me, any opportunity to see a Firefly alumni is worth it.

If one thinks of "Babel" minus the melodrama and histrionics, you get a clearer picture of what Moodysson has done here.
