This is a great film for any young woman to see, who has been told she’s not strong enough, not good enough, and not smart enough and will not take no for an answer.

What we have from director Alex Holmes — a guy who knows a great cinematic story when he hears one — is a documentary with all the nervous-making energy of a first-rate drama; a cast of sailors who are both endearing and intelligent; and a delicately wrought suspense story.

That makes Maiden not just a ripping yarn but a meaningful one. Like “RBG” last year, it’s a story that reminds women — and men — not only how far we’ve come in one generation but how far we’ve yet to go.

Despite half of it being a talking head documentary, which I'm not for, the combination of the powerful women telling their story with the images shot in the eighties of the race is absolutely stunning. You cheer them on because they're there to set the trademark for all women after them, opening a door for them for opportunities. These girls are saying now again that if you listen to what people tell you you can't do, human kind would not have been great at all. And that is a strong message that I will take to heart.

Although a little slow at the outset, this inspiring and entertaining documentary about the first all-female crew to participate in the round-the-world Whitbread yachting race is more than just a laudatory exercise in taking on the untried. It's also an engaging, beautifully photographed adventure saga about an arduous task that supremely tests one's wits and endurance, regardless of gender or any other defining characteristic. A riveting, spellbinding tale that often has an edge-of-your-seat quality about it, quite rare for a documentary. See it and be both enlightened and entertained.
