Ridiculously contrived and borderline-creepy romance that feels like an extended Technicolor sweeps week plotline from "General Hospital", with a sudsy, overbearing score peppered with purple renditions of Chopin, Beethoven, etc. Just because Douglas Sirk directed it doesn't mean it's great by any means.

Magnificent Obsession, unlike other Sirk films, is less of a social critique and more of a self-reflexive statement from the magnificent director. Yet, in philosophical terms, Sirk is as sound as ever: the film is as faux-feminist as anything that you could ever expect from him.

This classic melodrama from Douglas Sirk isn't too far off from his other films that I have seen, yet somehow this one didn't work for me. It was a little too cheesy for my taste. Sirk definitely knows how to use colour though and the film looks great. See it and judge for yourself.
