One star for the hunting dogs and one star for the wonderful dresses that Mia wears. Otherwise it was like watching a slow moving train wreck through acquaint French village.

Watching Madame Bovary, you find yourself wishing that Barthes had done something, anything with Flaubert’s novel other than slap it up on the screen as yet another tale of woe from long ago.

Believe it or not, I've never read this book, nor seen any other film adaptation of it other than this most recent one.

For a film with rich material to draw from, I expected more. It's cinematically beautiful but once that fades into the background we are left with a bland tasting meal which indeed has a bad aftertaste.
