[Barthes'] measured, distanced style brings a certain stiffness to the proceedings and makes us miss even more than usual the Emma Bovary interior monologue that makes the book so memorable.

OH the freaking tedium that is this movie. Mia Wasikowska is really good in this [check her out in Jane Eyre - you will get her excellent acting AND a better movie overall], but it just drags on and on and on to the point that you check out and could care less about what happens to the characters. Hideous movie.

A poor adaptation of Gustave Flaubert's classic novel, Madame Bovary is monotonous and cliché. The story follows a young woman who marries a country doctor, but finding her new life unfulfilling, she starts to spend recklessly and seeks out new lovers. Mia Wasikowska gives a strong performance but the character is underdeveloped. The film never really delves into the why behind her infidelity and excessive spending, which makes her come off as a rather shallow character. And the dialog is quite dry, with no passion to it. However, the film looks beautiful; with elaborate costumes and set designs. Also, the score does a good job at setting the mood and tone. Yet despite its first class production values, Madame Bovary has no heart.

Sophie Barthes neglects to thoroughly conceive of Emma's plight, instead making only sporadic gestures to it.

For a film with rich material to draw from, I expected more. It's cinematically beautiful but once that fades into the background we are left with a bland tasting meal which indeed has a bad aftertaste.
