In this touchingly funny, quietly heartbreaking biopic, David Tennant excels as the complex and flawed Laing.

Alistair Harkness 23 Mar 2017

Writer/director Robert Mullan plays fast and loose with the truth in some major ways, mostly in failed bids to give the rather shapeless story some emotional heft.

This film depicts Laing's views of mental health in a way that provokes thought while it entertains with the drama that arises from the ideas of any renegade genius. The script and the acting were intelligent and engaging, without straying into the land of psychobabble and technicalities.

Edward Porter 09 Apr 2017

David Tennant [plays the role] with conviction and a nice Glaswegian drawl, but the film is a dodgy business that makes things up -- including a pregnant girlfriend (Elisabeth Moss) -- for no good reason.

Matthew Bond 10 Oct 2017

It's fascinating and particularly well cast but, despite Tennant's watchable efforts, the decision to concentrate on the Kingsley Hall years rather than more of Laing's life proves a frustrating one.
