Lumière & Company (1995)

40 international directors were asked to make a short film using the original Cinematographe invented by the Lumière Brothers, working under conditions similar to those of 1895. There were three rules: (1) The film could be no longer than 52 seconds, (2) no synchronized sound was permitted, and (3) no more than three takes.

Even the gamest of viewers will want to indulge her nostalgia judiciously, to avoid getting sour on the narcissism of the exercise.

The documentary itself is no great production. What makes this film transcend is the fact that it unites some of the best filmmakers in the world to do what they do best and to express pure honesty about their craft. Incredibly enough, with a camera that works after 100 years. If anything, this documentary addresses one of the most insensible questions about cinema- Is cinema mortal? Everyone has a different opinion. But it gives me the shivers when I think about my response.

A collection of shorts, Lynch's is interesting but a little preconcieved

It is a great project involves so many influential directors of this decade. It is remarkable that sophisticated and simple shorts are presented as they are. The questions regarding to "Why they take the Lumiere's project? Why they film? Is cinema mortal?" was intriguing. A vey nice and interesting project.

A documentary in which the majority of the language was foreign and the message is understandable
