Lovesong profiteert van een goed spel tussen Jena Malone en Riley Keough, maar krijgt helaas maar weinig om tanden dat gaat over hun geheimzinnige lesbische relatie, die te kort wordt gedaan om ruimte te maken voor nodige opvulling die de drama juist doen remmen. Intieme kleine film die juist meer van dat intieme nodig had moeten hebben.

It can be a bit frustrating awaiting big emotional moments that Lovesong is reluctant to provide, but the world in which it takes place feels so richly thought-out that all the small moments feel that much more real.

Director and co-writer So Yong Kim achieves a delicate, naturalistic tone both visually (many scenic outdoor settings involving rain, bodies of water or both) and melodically (a mostly soothing heart-fluttery soundtrack) that is underlined by handheld camera close-ups.
