I remember this as odd, baffling, brave, and just the sort of film I'd like to see again after all these years

Intellectual teaser that wrestles with discovering more about love and death than meets the eye.

This mid-period Alain Resnais film has a sense of understated excellence. Bergman often comes to mind (subject explored) with a hint of Antonioni (use of colours) with top-notch musical interludes by Hans Werner Henze and Sacha Vierny's cinematography.
