Wonderful for its wit and fun. The songs are snappy, with suprisingly naughty lyrics for the time. This film was shot with more care than most movies that come out today. Maurice Chevalier does a great job at acting like someone who is probably very close to himself. Great for anyone who wants to branch away from technicolor musicals.

Considering I do not care for either of the two leads - Maurice Chevalier and Jeannette MacDonald, my rating is quite high, so other viewers may see this as a film more deserving than an 8/10. One of the best musicals of the 1930's, and ofall time, and certainly one of the most creative. The opening musical number is brilliant, incorporating the morning sounds of a village square into music. Most of the musical numbers are unusual and creative. An extremely enjoyable movie. Great songs, delightful plot.

Cutesy romantic comedy from the early sound era. If nothing else, the musical numbers are catchy and bound to be burned into your memory for a LONG time...

5 stars (Masterpiece): The most fluid musical film comedy ever made, with the combination of lyrics, music, sound effects, and cinematography just perfect. Mamoulian expertly directs a relatively thin story and makes every scene memorable (and subversive); filled with numerous inventive ideas that showed great potential for how sound films can be made. A landmark movie musical and one that all serious moviegoers should see.
