If not quite on the level of Garbus's terrific Bobby Fischer documentary, this still filled with fond recollections of Mazza's life and career. Fans will relish it.

With the exception of Lindsey Lohan, there was a great collection of performers collected to interpret and recite a newly found batch of letters, diaries and poems written by Marilyn with provide a little more of an incite into the Icon that was Marilyn Monroe and does show a little more of her haunted psyche as she battled a troubled past and the attempt to dive into the method. A slick and polished production that was engaging, if not an entirely new project since a somewhat similar idea was attempted with About a Boy with Kurt Cobain 7 years ago. Not bad.

Behind that million dollar smile was a life of pain and sadness. All she truly wanted was to become a good actress, and took on the training and hardships to become one. Despite her popularity, her career was riddled with roles that lacked depth and at best was the âsilly blondeâ? in many of her films. Interesting to note she could never command a salary as sizeable as her contemporary at the time, Elizabeth Taylor. At its peak Monroeâ(TM)s 100k to Taylorâ(TM)s $1M.

This is a beautiful, creative and artful documentary that doubles as a tribute to one of cinema's everlasting bombshells and overcomes its narrative holes by being sincere and well made.

Love Marilyn isn't perfect, but compared to pretty much any of the countless other documentaries on MM, it can seem that way at times. Director Liz Garbus takes her subject seriously, for a start - and that hasn't always been the case. The use of actors to voice Monroe's personal writings largely works well, and there's also some lovely archive footage. Marilyn Monroe, perhaps the most fabled Hollywood star of them all, is such a vast, complex subject that inevitably the film can't cover every aspect, and is sometimes inevitably partial. But overall, it's a moving, and perceptive meditation on what it was like to be a woman, and an actress, in mid-century America - and after all, these things haven't changed so much in the fifty years since Marilyn left us.
