Love at First Fight (2014)

Arnaud, facing an uncertain future and a dearth of choices in a small French coastal town, meets and falls for the apocalyptic-minded Madeleine, who joins an army boot camp to learn military and survival skills to prepare for the upcoming environmental collapse. Intrigued and excited by Madeleine's wild ideas, Arnaud signs up for the boot camp himself. They soon realize that the boot camp is harder than they'd imagined, but the experience nonetheless cements them together as the couple continues to explore their young love.

This is a great movie. A more accurate translation of the title would be The Survivalists! In French it's Les Combattants...

[The film] doesn't live up to its promise... [but] it's an intriguingly off-kilter relationship drama and the two leads are persuasive.

Beautiful and touching story about love and survival. These two opposites fall for each other and show us their struggle to survive in and outside the army, in a well developed script by Thomas Cailley. We don't have so much info about Madeleine and some characters are disposable but, in a nutshell, Love At First Fight is a funny story, with an amazing soundtrack. And, fortunately, a rare case of a profound and moving romantic story with youngs roles. Go watch it as soon as you can!

The eerie emptiness of the northern countryside, evacuated after a forest fire, is a little like that evoked by Bruno Dumont. Cailley is a talent to watch.
