Love at First Fight (2014)

Arnaud, facing an uncertain future and a dearth of choices in a small French coastal town, meets and falls for the apocalyptic-minded Madeleine, who joins an army boot camp to learn military and survival skills to prepare for the upcoming environmental collapse. Intrigued and excited by Madeleine's wild ideas, Arnaud signs up for the boot camp himself. They soon realize that the boot camp is harder than they'd imagined, but the experience nonetheless cements them together as the couple continues to explore their young love.

Though amicable and funny, it might disappoint those expecting a film more ambitious and layered from the praise of the [Directors' Fortnight] jury.

The blossoming love story is worthwhile, but the setting and background for it offers up the most interest.

Love at First Fight is overflowing with relentlessly acerbic humor that shapes the way the film's two young protagonists contend with not just each other, but also with the uncertainties of the world they're emerging into as adults.

This is quite an amusing film until about the half point where it completely loses its way really. Maybe it's just funnier when Madeleine is oblivious to Arnaud's advances but I found myself bored once they left the army camp. Promising debut overall though.

It's undeniably on the slight side but this is an endearingly scrappy film with a fighter's spunk and a lover's heart that doesn't surrender to sentimentality.
