Urban Christmas Carol - decent enough 'heart warming' tale. My first Crimbo film of 2012

A nice and sweet, though pretty weird, flick which I discovered on cable TV the other day, is "Lost Christmas" of 2011 which while meandering through general human emotions of all kinds, offers a surprising ending. British productions are not only James Bond or Harry Potter, but they can also, every 5 years or so, show a big heart.

This isn't going to take any awards for the best film ever made, but with such a low budget provided by the BBC you would be naive to start the film expecting a Hollywood budget blockbuster. Izzard manages to hold a certain air of mystery throughout and the rest of the cast give a solid performance. Character development was the one underdeveloped part of the film leaving supporting actor Jason Flemyng's character feeling less of the spotlight than could have been provided. The plot is smart, but not arrogant and plays out like a well written book, especially in concluding. The music however is especially well selected, the inclusion of Tom McRae's relatively unknown "Wonderful Chrismastime" sets the tone for both the tragic and happier moments in the film and ensures that this is a personal Christmas favorite.

The core of the movie is a common theme in holiday films: an opportunity to change a life filled with regret through a mystical holiday journey. What sets Lost Christmas apart are the gritty, heartbreaking performances by Eddie Izzard, young Larry Mills, and supporting actor Jason Flemyng. Guaranteed to give you great holiday FEELS without falling into the trap of being overwhelmingly saccharine as many holiday movies do.

Great christmas film that is rather like a combination of It's a Wonderful Life and A Christmas Carol in its themes of loss and redemption with a little supernatural thrown in. Eddie Izzard and young Larry Mills are very good.
