I was lucky enough to see this film at the Woods Hole Film Festival where mother and daughter were hawking the movie on the street, handing out post cards. I've been a backer (Kickstarter) and supporter (especially on facebook) ever since. This is not JUST a film, although it is a terrific story -- put together with a combination of home movies and contemporary commentary -- it is a movement about families, relationships, and most of all about the power and joy of forgiveness. See it!!

Gayle's good-natured fight to reconcile with a person who sees nothing wrong with her own behavior proves both a fascinating character study and an intimate portrayal of a mother's love turned hostile.

Look at Us Now, Mother is a moving and often hilarious account of the filmmaker's exploration of her very dysfunctional past with her uber critical, narcissistic Mom who is now in her 90's. Shot with intimate handheld "up close and personal" interviews that are interwoven with fascinating old family footage and photos from the 50's and 60's, this documentary is wake up call for all of us with leftover "Mommy issues". I applaud the filmmaker for being able to expose the dark secrets and abuse of her devastating childhood and some how come out of it with love, compassion and forgiveness. Most people would have cut their ties and moved on long ago. Anyone with a mother can relate and also be riveted and entertained by the startling raw emotion and dark, ironic humor that makes this very personal and ultimately uplifting documentary memoir a must see.

"Mother" is definitely worth a look as an involving exercise in parental indiscretion, unexamined and over-examined lives, and a nostalgic look at East Coast Jewish culture.

A haunting, searing, thoroughly engaging character and relationship exploration that is ultimately uplifting and inspiring. Valiant filmmaker Gayle Kirschenbaum dares to expose her most intimate pain and emerges victorious because she chooses forgiveness and love over acrimony or resentment. An artistic and emotional triumph - this resonant documentary is not to be missed.
