Look at Me (2004)

Talented 20-year-old Lolita dreams of a singing career. But her self-esteem is low due to her weight problem and her narcissistic father, Étienne, a literary star with scant interest in his daughter's life. Lolita finds little comfort in the attentions of her vocal coach, suspecting the woman is using her to meet her influential father. Étienne's second wife proves to be Lolita's only trustworthy ally in her private battle to find a sense of worth.

Look at Me is a well-written and brilliantly acted French drama about the sharp edges of celebrityhood and criticism in the literary world.

I liked the double-entendre of the title; that it's more than just the daughter's line to the father, but refers also to all the characters' preoccupation with labels, social position, and success. The main irony they're trying to get across, I guess, is that the daughter ends up mirroring the father's callous and self-indulgent behavior (but also redeems herself by the end.) None of the principles comes off unscathed, but at least Lolita (the daughter), Sebastien (Lolita's unrequited lover), and Sylvia (Lolita's singing coach) all undergo important transitions. Etienne (Lolita's father) and Pierre (Sylvia's husband), meanwhile, pretty much remain egocentric SOBs for the duration--indeed, I think they even get worse. I thought it was a realistic take on a common dynamic between "successful" fathers and "insecure" daughters. Impressive, too, that the actress playing Sylvia (Agnes Jaoui) and actor playing Etienne (Jean-Pierre Bacri)--married in real life--wrote and directed the film.

The choir performance at the end turned to a stimulate for audiences. The big girl forget herself became nirvana.

A thoughtful and highly watchable film from director Agnes Jaoui, who also takes a leading role. The theme of what people do to attract attention and how they react when they do or don't get it runs throughout the story of its main protagonists. There are some achingly sad moments here, along with quite a few which are wryly amusing. Intelligently scripted by Jaoui and another of the leading actors, Jean-Pierre Bacri, this is a highly engrossing piece of cinema.

Examines a variety of questions, such as superficiality versus substance, materialism versus self-worth, and taking advantage of others versus forming sincere relationships.
