Long Strange Trip (2017)

The tale of the Grateful Dead is inspiring, complicated, and downright messy. A tribe of contrarians, they made art out of open-ended chaos and inadvertently achieved success on their own terms. Never-before-seen footage and interviews offer this unprecedented and unvarnished look at the life of the Dead.

Compelling whether you care about the band or not, the film provides a historical understanding of the Dead and of the fan base rather than just a case for their enjoyment.

Kenji Fujishima 24 May 2017

Not only does the film provide an exhaustive account of the band’s rise and fall, but it also clearly articulates their importance in music history, their singular character as a performing entity and even the distinctive nature of their fandom.

I remember when JFK was assassinated, I didn't cry. I didn't cry when the Towers fell on 9/11. I burst into tears in 1995 for a man I never knew personally, due to the music he made that touched my soul. This documentary, especially the last act, brought back those feelings, and helped me understand a little better why Jerry Garcia and his music had such an impact on my life. I'm glad I got to see the Dead before they became such a machine in the late 80's and 90's. The joy of the music and the sad way it became such a burden to Jerry at the end made my heart break.

It’s all about finding the gems, and Long Strange Trip is a treasure chest.

Jon Campbell 24 May 2017

If the story is known, this telling is lusher than any before, the film stuffed with rare archival footage and performance clips. The effect is one of coasting along amid a vast, noisy, variegated parade, vividly rendered. And that works just fine.
