Tom Duggins 27 Dec 2017

The magic of the film is that it finds the drama of London in the places we seldom look - building sites, old brutalist apartment blocks, underground escalators and scaffolds.

Neil Smith 27 Aug 2017

The 'city symphony' genre that flourished in the '20s is made over in a monochrome montage from director-editor Alex Barrett, offering a view of London life spanning the city's architecture, wildlife, religions and nightspots.

Jamie Neish 12 Aug 2018

As a salute to London, Barrett's work is to be celebrated in itself.

Jon Lyus 30 Aug 2017

A good city symphony, but far from the cinematic heights of its predecessors. Watch it to feel better about London.

Phil Hoad 31 Aug 2017

Organising his shots into thematic blocks - nostalgic byways, religion, bins - Barrett has the knack of drawing out visual details that cause nice eddies in the film's melancholy flow.
