Love this twist on a gangster movie...Colin Farrell is a great actor

William Monahan makes his directorial debut in this British Gangster film. Colin Farrell stars as Mitchell, a gangster who is just coming out of prison and would like to escape the life that he has lived. He gets a legitimate job being a bodyguard for actress Charlotte (Keira Knightley), who seems to be having a nervous breakdown and refuses to leave her house because of the paparazzi. Mitchell though runs into problems when crime boss Gant (Ray Winstone) decides that Mitch can't just leave the crime business and must work for him. Suddenly everyone he knows and cares about is in trouble. The film has a frenetic pace and Farrell and Knightley do a good job in the roles they are given. Monahan wrote a script in which the dialogue is attempting to be snappy but never quite lives up to his previous work, which was writing the great Martin Scorsese film The Departed. In the end, it is a solid entry in the British Gangster genre but there are better films from Guy Ritchie and Matthew Vaughn that fit in better.

My wife and I watched it on holiday in Greece and were gripped by the storyline and performances. The tomatometer is way off on this rating. Boo!

A perfect brit movie, reminiscent of Get Carter. Colin Farell is very good in the role as a bad person whose outgrown a much worse world, to become an enlightened better person. He is a good enough actor to portray a sense of desperation and loss, especially with the face. I've thought he was quite skilled indeed since seeing 'In Bruges (2008) and Cassandra's Dream (2007) for example. However he cannot be untangled from the world he has entered. The tragedy of it all is that it is all stupid and needless. Much like Carlitos way, a chain of evil begetting revenge and a senseless outcome. The script does not offer a solution just a pessimistic outlook on the dark side of life and very entertaining it is too.
