It isn't just a rehash of the same old stories and clips. It's a stylish and entertaining examination of why it's still on the air, 40 years on - and why we're still talking about it.

Don’t expect the real dirt on “Saturday Night Live” from the doc Live From New York! The movie is fun, but it’s a cinematic coffee-table book.

As many of the more negative reviews have noted, Live From New York! just does not have the run time (or maybe balls) to get as deep into the murky depths that SNL has offered. It certainly touches on the dizzying heights we've seen the show achieve, but as a celebratory film, it can only tap dance around SNL's more controversial aspects with an "We din'nt know it was wrong at the time!" excuse.

The film may work best as a supplement to the underwhelming three-hour-plus extravaganza broadcast in February to celebrate “SNL’s” 40th anniversary.

There's still enough here to make it worth a watch, especially given the high caliber of interview subjects and the (still funny) clips.
