It amazes me how this movie even got made. I can't even tell if this is a good or a bad movie, but for sheer entertainment value I give it 4 stars. Roger Daltrey riding a 8 foot phallus and a Frankenstein/Richard Wagner/Adolph Hitler robot hybrid killing machine are just two of many memorable moments. Not a whole lot of substance here, but I doubt that's what Ken Russell was going for. And he must have somehow had a helluva a budget from the looks of it. Reminds me somewhat of "Phantom of the Paradise" but far more surreal.

Ken Russell was the 70s answer to Uwe Boll. If Tommy was a rediculous surrealistic over-the-top send up of a rock opera, Lisztomania is a more rediculous, more surreal, more over-the-top. I thought it couldn't get any worse than the 30 foot cock dance, and then they pulled out the laser-armed, heavenly angel rocket. This makes the Bee Gee's Sgt. Pepper look like Citizen fucking Kane.

A prime example of a film so bad, it's brilliant. Ken Russell does another film of a composer, but giving it the same bonkers, modern attitude he'd used in Tommy (1975). Roger Daltrey plays Franz Liszt as if he were a 70's rock star, and it focuses on a supposed rivalry between him and Richard Wagner (Paul Nicholas), how he tried to win the affections of Princess Carolyn of Russia (Sara Kestelman), and even encounters The Pope, (Ringo Starr, in cowboy boots as well!! :o) Probabily the most bonkers film ever made, it's the biggest load of twaddle ever made, BUT I LOVE IT!! :D It's visually beautiful, but it shows Russell at his very best with the mad imagery and sex & nudity, (get the tissues out Gentlemen!! :D) But, it has some moments in it which beggar belief!! :o Plus, it has a score by Rick Wakeman of Yes, and Daltrey is a good actor as well!! ;) Either 1/5 or 5/5 :D

Ahh Ken Russell the English Fellini? Well maybe but this 1975 rock musical based on the life of Franz Liszt is so over the top that its beyond the top and into its own space. Roger Daltrey is Liszt telling his rival composers to piss off and riding atop of a giant penis while women are dancing to praise his bedroom prowess. Then Paul Nicholas plays Wagner as a scheming Nazi vampire who becomes a machine gun toting Frankenstein monster. Ringo Starr turns up as the pope and Rick Wakeman plays Thor while the film climaxes with Daltey in a rocket powered pipe organ!!!!!!!!!!! Russell is clearly enjoying himself here and if you take the film a as tongue in cheek mickey take then you will go along with it. However if your expecting factual I would suggest you look elsewhere.
