Lyon Gaultier is a deserter in the Foreign Legion arriving in the USA entirely hard up. He finds his brother between life and death and his sister-in-law without the money needed to heal her husband and to maintain her child. To earn the money needed, Gaultier decides to take part in some very dangerous clandestine fights.

At least one of the top three films wherein Van Damme goes AWOL to avenge something or other by bloodsport. Kinda bizarre for its assimilation of professional wrestling moves, the family unit presented, an ending melodramatic enough to make DW Griffith blush, and pretty much the entirety of the unitard duel in the largely empty pool. Also bizarre for the fact that Brian Thompson is in it, yet at no point does he make a weird face and kill someone. For a guy a nicknamed 'Lionheart,' he hits an awful amount of people in the pills.

One of Jean-Claude's better films from his early career, Lionheart (or AWOL as it was known on this side of the Atlantic) sees him escaping from a French Foreign Legion outpost in Northern Africa to travel to Los Angeles when he finds out his brother has been left for dead after a botched deal with drug dealers. Arriving in New York after 3 or 4 weeks at sea, he attracts the attention of a former fighter turned hustler who promotes him as an underground boxer in order for Lyon (Van Damme) to help pay for his trip to LA, and to help his widowed sister in-law to help pay the rent to keep her and her daughter from living rough. Entertaining movie with some good stunts and fights.
