The director's existential sarcasm is muted here.

Kaurismaki strips his own already minimalist style of its narrative spontaneity in this loose take on the noir genre. There's something about this quiet world of missed opportunities that makes every slight and colossal failure of Koistinen's life more heartbreaking than the last. Does the title refer to the dim possibility of hope that our protagonist has suffered for? The ending reminds me of Bresson's Pickpocket. Love comes too late.

The downbeat tone of Lights in the Dusk just escapes offense and self-parody due to Kaurismäki's careful, subtle craftsmanship.

I read some reviews when this came out critisizing "Laitakaupungin valot" of being "too straightforward". What the fuck has that to do with it being a good movie or not? I reckon this to be yet another great flick from this brilliant filmmaker. As always dark, witty and touching, with great dialogues and good acting. Nice end to this trilogy. Just wish Matti Pellonpää was still alive.

Sydamen sarkeva mieskuvaus. Pieksee edellisen 6-0. Musiikkivalinnat parhaita Kaurismaelta. Nayttely mahtavaa ja kuvien asettelu todella kaunista.
