Lenny Cooke (2013)

In 2001, Lenny Cooke was the most hyped high school basketball player in the country, ranked above future greats LeBron James, Amar'e Stoudemire, and Carmelo Anthony. A decade later, Lenny has never played a minute in the NBA. In this quintessentially American documentary, filmmaking brothers Joshua and Benny Safdie track the unfulfilled destiny of a man for whom superstardom was only just out of reach.

Lenny Cooke is humbling, as well as a cautionary tale for young people thinking they can make the big time.

Kristina K 13 May 2014

Sad that he had all his eggs in one basket like that; but a great documentary nonetheless

Scott Tobias 03 Dec 2013

While Lenny Cooke’s considerable social and emotional resonance still doesn’t measure up to Hoop Dreams’, the Safdies beautifully evoke the other side of the professional game, the many basketball casualties who don’t get movies made about them.

Nicolas Rapold 05 Dec 2013

Like the 1994 documentary landmark “Hoop Dreams,” Lenny Cooke measures out the years with a pensive jazz motif, but the film feels comparatively stuck on a couple of notes.

John B 06 May 2014

Great to see should be shown at all the high end basketball camps.
