Le Million (1931)

Debt-ridden painter Michel is overcome with joy at discovering that he has just won 1 million florins in the Dutch lottery, but almost immediately, he discovers that his softhearted girlfriend, Béatrice, has given away his jacket containing the winning ticket to an elderly petty thief. Soon Michel, Beatrice and Michel's artistic rival, Prosper, are hurtling through the streets of Paris on the trail of the missing jacket.

Clair... you changed cinematic sound forever with this one. I imagine it would be like watching "Moulin Rouge" today or the first time.

Clair should get more credit (as Renoir usually does) for compositions in depth and fluid mise-en-scene pre-Welles.

Nothing more then a very fun and always lively comedy. This film is more or less just a French version of the Marx Brothers. The story is thin, the songs of upbeat, the slapstick is good, and it all blends together for a really pleasant comedy.

With the possible exceptions of LOVE ME TONIGHT and GIGI, the most perfect film musical ever made. (Interesting that they're all set in Paris - maybe they just do these things better when they think French!) There are movie musicals with higher high points, but none where the pleasure is as perfectly seamless as it is here.
