Private eye Phillip Marlowe wants to get out of the detective racket and into crime writing. As a Raymond Chandler fan I'm disappointed that his screenplay wasn't used for this film. As a train-wreck fan this was awesome. The whole movie is shot from the POV of the main character and it's such a gimmick that it distracts from the actual film. Montgomery does his best quasi-Bogart but isn't that good, Audrey Totter is laughable as the leading lady but I quite enjoyed Lloyd Nolan as a disgruntled copper.

I didn't like the way it started at all - Philip Marlowe talking to the viewer. Eck. And then, the whole movie is from Marlowe's point of view! Double eck. Save your time, and just read the book!

A film that's one big gimmick, but fun to sit through once, even if it does take you out of the film. Think Half-Life set in a Film-noir setting, yet it's mostly those parts where people talk to you and you have nothing to shoot.

The s l o w e s t m o v i e e v e r . . . There are so many things that don't work for the film. The perspective is difficult and felt like a Time Crisis arcade game. We are forced to see events in Marlowe's eyes and nothing else. Our peripheral vision is a square and not panoramic. We don't see events but we're told events. There is too much going on and too aural-based for a medium so visual. Stick to the novel...

Love this movie!!! All great mystery novels are in first person narrative, well this movie was from that perspective, the only time you saw marlowe was when he would look in a mirror...best Chandler adaptation.
