Montgomery is super miscast as Marlowe, but the movie (shot entirely from Marlowe's POV), while gimmicky, is pretty darn inventive for the 1940's.

This is my first Chandler adaptation. The plot is complex and confusing and this isn't helped by the fact that we rarely see the protagonist interact with the shady characters because this is filmed mostly from Marlowe's point of view. I didn't find this annoying, but rather interesting. Why did Montgomery choose to do this? He was the lead so it was quite an undertaking. There are a few drawbacks - I most noticed the slowness of his movement dictated by the hefty cameras - but overall I wouldn't call the choice of style a failure. I enjoyed the sharp dialogue and look forward to more Chandler adaptations in the future.

Exactly what I look for in a thriller/detective film. It has plenty of infamous detective Philip Marlowe's biting wit, a dazzling femme fatale, a great plot with twists that threw me off, and an innovative filming technique. The entire film is shot in brilliant first-person, so that we feel like we're solving the case with Marlowe. We see and hear what he sees and hears. Evidence comes to us only when it comes to him. I had a lot of fun watching it and was incredibly impressed. Five star murder mystery. I highly recommend it!

It's supossed to be one of the greatest film noirs of all time, and I can see why! Completely revolutionary for it's time and I loved it! I highly recommend it, though I kinda solved the murder as soon as the evidence presented itself.

Excellent film noir that tries something completely new and succeeds tremendously. Montgomery was as gifted a director as he was an actor. Audrey Totter should have been more famous.
