La Promesse (1996)

Igor, aged 15, and his father Roger deal in housing and peddling illicit labor in the outlying districts of Liege, Belgium. Scams, lies and swindling rule their lives. When one of his father's illegal workers gets injured on the job and asks Igor to promise to take care of his wife and baby, Igor finds himself at a crossroad. He wants to keep the promise, but the price would be to betray his father.

Dirty streets, Dirty people. Is the title a promise to a kindly man or the promise of a new generation? Answer: both.

The first major film by the Belgian Dardennes brothers, this adopts their trademark realist style dealing with very human stories within the working class of the city of Liege. Here we follow a young teen Igor, whose father accomodates illegal immigrants and exploits them for cheap labour. When one of the African immigrants dies in a buidling site accident his dying words to Iogor are to take care of his wife and baby. The film follows as Igor has to make difficult moral decisions, torn between loyalty for his dad and the promise he kept. The script is full of complexity and subtlety and there are great acting performances. Powerful drama with a strong social message as well.

A story about courage, strength, and growth. The camera is both a friend and an enemy to us here, supplying detail that can be overwhelmingly hypnotic and cringingly brutal.

The Dardennes are the great moral filmmakers of current European cinema, filling the rather large shoes of Krzysztof Kieslowski. La Promesse is them finding themselves as narrative craftsman and Igor's story shares all the qualities that make their later films so graceful and relevant.
