La Commare Secca (1962)

Roman police detectives interrogate a series of potential perpetrators in their struggle to determine whom to arrest for the brutal murder of a beautiful prostitute whose body is discovered in a park on the day of a torrential rainstorm. One by one, the prime suspects -- girl-crazy teenager Nino, pickpocket Canticchia, a soldier on leave, a tourist and a pimp -- recount the events of the day to the police, each insisting he is innocent.

Bertolucci's first feature draws its plot from the giallo tradition (investigation into the murder of a prostitute). However, with a look to the French New Wave, this is told in a freer arthouse style, with four suspects reviewing their activities of the night in question. Seemingly hand-held camera, some experimental cutting, location shooting. Offers a glimpse into some Italian lives of the time but Bertolucci improved after this.

The Italian version of "Rashomon". Like the Kurosawa film, it is about the search for an absolute truth in an often murky, subjective world. The police, investigating a murder, take testimony from many witnesses: the sources don't always agree...

One of the most fascinating of all directing debuts.

not as grim and sinister as the title suggests. the story by pasolini holds my interest, and bertolluci is still learning in his debut directorial effort. the way the film is structured, it doesn't build up curiosity for me to discover the killer (many giallos are more successful in this area) though the sequence of events of each suspect before the murder engages enough to keep my attention on the screen. also, some hysterical acting outbursts which may seem a little over the top.

Mr. Bertolucci's dissections reveal the lying and viciousness common to these beasts in the human jungle.
