King of Thorn (2010)

A mysterious virus, nicknamed Medusa, is spreading around Japan, turning its victims into stone. Given the impossibility of finding an immediate cure, the government opts for cryopreserving a select group of patients until they come up with a solution. Kasumi, one of the chosen ones, has been asleep for years and her awakening, more than a bed of roses, is a bed of thorns, and happens in the midst of total chaos where monstrous creatures lie in wait all around.

This sci-fi/horror/action amalgam moves at the clip of the videogames from which it borrows its grind-and-advance narrative mechanics. The plot ? killer plague sees a clutch of the usual genre suspects (cute kid, mysterious bad boy, shifty intellectual etc.) entering cryo-freeze only to awaken and find themselves besieged by alien nasties ? is pure, recycled pulp. It?s a fact done no favours by a reliance on an overstated Sleeping Beauty motif and tedious it?s-all-a-dream-no-it?s-not!-or-is-it? perceptual rug-pulling. But if you?ve ever pined for a film in which autonomous brambles take the form of a botanical dragon and ensnare Edinburgh Castle, King of Thorn will scratch that itch but good.

D'un cyber-onirisme visuel qui n'est pas sans rappeler les "Ghost in the shell" de Mamoru Oshii, "Le Roi des Ronces" se range egalement dans les oeuvres d'anticipation metaphysiques comme les Japonais savent les concocter. Outre l'interÃªt offert par le traitement du sujet - en gros, La Belle au Bois dormant revisitee par Matrix, Aliens et Resident Evil -, cet Anime seduit egalement par sa parfaite maitrise des principes du Survival tels qu'etablis par les jeux video et le cinema hollywoodiens, un genre finalement peu exploite par les films d'animation. Cependant, le passage d'une serie Ã un long-metrage ne s'est pas fait sans dommages et "Le roi des ronces" semble souvent tente de mettre en avant ses evidents appÃ¢ts visuels pour faire oublier un scenario rendu confus et elliptique par le format film, mais dont les grandes lignes permettent de percevoir le reel potentiel.

Although this movie has its dragging moments, and confusing moments, I enjoyed this film. The post apolapytic survival horror messhed with monsters in a castle of thorns was very original to say the least. The film kept me interested, was unpredictable and really had some dark and eerie moments that even had me cringing. The movie is like jurassic park, meets anime and sleeping beauty.

Like a lot of anime, this starts out very well and is wholly compelling for the first half, then it gets verrryy complicated with random dreamlike flashbacks that explain very little. I always end up feeling a bit dumb because when these films get to that point I just lose touch with the story and end up not understanding what the *bleep* just happened. So, great to a point but ultimately confusing and unsatisfying.
