King of the Belgians (2016)

The King of the Belgians is on a state visit in Istanbul when his country falls apart. He must return home at once to save his kingdom. But a solar storm causes airspace and communications to shut down. No planes. No phones. With the help of a British filmmaker and a troupe of Bulgarian folk singers, the King and his entourage manage to escape over the border. Incognito. Thus begins an odyssey across the Balkans during which the King discovers the real world - and himself.

King of the Belgians is an undemanding offbeat caricature that turns up politically concise in its sayings, yet considerably stinging in its depictions.

Diego Batlle 12 Sep 2016

A mockumentary with a sadistic tone that has a lot more to give than flaws. [Full review in Spanish]

Yago García 15 Aug 2017

An European 'mockumentary' that doesn't meet expectations. [Full review in Spanish]

My husband and I both loved this movie-- a mockumentary. It is an improbable roadtrip by a monarch and his staff, who are accompanied by a filmmaker. During the road trip, the King reflects upon duty, personal freedom, happiness, the loving as well as the dark side of life. There are scenes of beauty and transcendence-- characters occasionally look like a part of a still life or tableau. This movie manages to be funny-- sometimes laugh out loud funny and other times just droll-- as well as thoughtful. You are left contemplating what it means to be alive and free.

This is a delightful, small scale comedy for whom the word "quirky" could have been invented. The pathos gives it a depth which enables it to transcend what is essentially a caper movie.
