This starts out as a fairly straightforward (though rather fussily edited) doc, and it has some good commentary from Arto Lindsay, Jim Sclavunos, and Jim Thirlwell. That's about all I can say in its favor. Most of the rest of the film is made up of Lydia Lunch (blecch) and Michael Gira bitterly complaining and being self-aggrandizing, and A.R.E. Weapons (remember them?) being douchebags (surprise!). Some of the then-emerging NYC bands (Black Dice, Liars, YYY) attempt to answer the director's questions seriously and get caught in the crossfire. What a waste of time.

a look into the no-wave music scene from the early 80's with mixed results. as a presentation of facts, it was fairly light on anything really tangible and focussed on a few bands from then and a few from now. i think where kill your idols got into real trouble was when it leaned on the older artists to talk about the newer generation - like some sort of untouchable, totally impossible thing happened and could never be matched. give me a break. it takes a really special ego to make unschooled noise on an instrument, it's expressionism and performance art. that kind of expression is still alive today in several forms of music, and while there are imitators from the same city, there are interesting things happening globally: this film chose to not look elsewhere. i like that it represented the city universally, i just think that crary fell short of something truly "insider" with his film.

good history of No-wave/NYC art music scene. Gets a bit tedious at times. Lydia Lunch cracks me up.

An interesting look at the "No wave" movement... Gogol Bodello kicks ass!
