Written, photographed, produced, edited, and directed by 26-year-old visual artist S A Crary, Kill Your Idols enjoyably documents the so-called No Wave scene.

Good but not great documentary about New York's no scene from the late 70's and early 80's. The interviews are there with the most prominent figures of the era, but there is a lot of whining about the new bands. The focus on the new bands make it seem as if there was a need to fill up time or allow the veterans to complain about the lack of purpose of new bands.

This starts out as a fairly straightforward (though rather fussily edited) doc, and it has some good commentary from Arto Lindsay, Jim Sclavunos, and Jim Thirlwell. That's about all I can say in its favor. Most of the rest of the film is made up of Lydia Lunch (blecch) and Michael Gira bitterly complaining and being self-aggrandizing, and A.R.E. Weapons (remember them?) being douchebags (surprise!). Some of the then-emerging NYC bands (Black Dice, Liars, YYY) attempt to answer the director's questions seriously and get caught in the crossfire. What a waste of time.

Very good music documentary on No-Wave. Not sure if I believe the references to modern day bands but that's okay.
