Kid Blue (1973)

Bickford Waner, an apparently naive young man from Fort Worth, arrives in the tiny Texas town of Dime Box and takes on a variety of menial jobs. He's befriended by Reese Ford and his wife Molly, but before long Molly has seduced Bickford. Only with the arrival of Bickford's former girlfriend Janet Conforto is it revealed that Bickford is actually the notorious train robber Kid Blue. Humiliated by a scandal arising from his affair with his friend's wife, Bickford gives up on going straight and plots a crime.

A very humble movie about an outlaw played by Dennis Hopper who gets a job and tries to play it straight, but the sheriff gives him a hard time. I really liked watching Hopper act in this one. It's simple, but sweet. One thing that stands out, he makes a friend at town but his wife turns out to be pretty crazy and causes some interesting drama. It's cute but scary at the same time because there are plenty of people who like to play mind games like that.

Great cast in this counterculture western, featuring some genuinely great character work by Oates, Ben Johnson bastarding it up as a sheriff provocateur, and Peter Boyle as a pill-poppin' inventor evangelist. The anti-modern, rebel subtext is none too subtle - but fairly well executed, pacey fun.
