Keep on Keepin' On (2014)

Eighty-nine year old trumpeting legend Clark Terry has mentored jazz wonders like Miles Davis and Quincy Jones, but Terry's most unlikely friendship is with Justin Kauflin, a 23-year-old blind piano player with uncanny talent, but debilitating nerves. As Justin prepares for the most pivotal moment in his budding career, Terry's ailing health threatens to end his own.

This is a film that introduces us to two immensely talented musicians - one is a jazz legend and the other a young prodigy. This joy of this movie is the discovery that even more inspiring than this duos' ability is their soulful innocence and optimism. There are also some cracking one-liners like this thrown around - "If at first you don't succeed, keep on sucking till you do suck a seed."

'Your mind is a powerful asset,' Terry tells Kauflin early in the film, and we realize this is a man who creates the 'happiest sound in jazz' even without his trumpet

This documentary is only for the old souls that LOVE jazz. You have to love it too not just like it.

Peter Rainer 02 Oct 2014

Since music is so much more than music between these two, their filmed sessions resemble not so much rehearsals as communions.

One need not be a jazz aficionado to enjoy this film. All that’s required is a smile.
