Katalin Varga (2009)

In the beautiful, otherworldly Carpathian Mountains a woman is traveling with a small boy in a horse and cart, looking to punish those who once abused her. For years, Katalin has been keeping a terrible secret. Hitchhiking with two men, she was brutally raped in the woods. Although she has kept silent about what happened, she has not forgotten, and her son Órban serves as a living reminder.

Terrific thriller from British director Peter Strickland, shot in the Hungarian-speaking part of Romania over a number of years using money left to him by his uncle. At first sight this is a straightforward revenge movie; a woman's husband discovers that he is not father to their son. He forces her to leave, and she tracks down the men who raped her 11 years earlier. However, the beautiful imagery, the sinister soundtrack that hints at the supernatural, and a powerful performance from Hilda Peter in the title role combine to create something special. The scene in which Varga describes her rape to a couple is horrifying, and is more effective than the often prurient voyeurism of other films in the genre. This is a striking achievement, especially when taking into consideration the miniscule budget.

Excellent classical drama set in a timeless but contemporary setting. One of the very best and sound designs I've heard.

Its strengths are built upon a brilliant concept (see the synopsis here), sharp screenplay, brilliant youthful direction, and note perfect performances. Its weaknesses underly budget constraint. Some of the imagery, of forests in particular, and the excellent application of sound, of nature in particular, call to mind the best aspects of Antichrist, but obviously without the cinematographic talent and high-tech cameras & post-production facilities on board. It is sincere and honest in its engagement with the audience, but a little more manipulation might help us engage more fully and feel the tension when it's present. One thing to admire - possibly the only film I've seen this year which ends when it should end. An interesting commentary on the conditions of the possibility of female empowerment in this part of the world. And a similarly trascendental analysis of revenge. A very smart film.

A sad and eerie revenge story, which benefits from a strong central performance and a haunting soundtrack. I'd recommend it.

Strickland delivers a psychologically complex twist on the genre's usual cathartic blood-letting. Haunted performances, an intricate and creepy score and a folklore-like setting add to the foreboding atmosphere.
