Kadosh (1999)

The year 2000 approaches in Jerusalem's Orthodox Mea Shearim quarter, where the women work, keep house, and have children so the men can study the Torah and the Talmud. Rivka is happily and passionately married to Meir, but they remain childless. The yeshiva's rabbi, who is Meir's father, wants Meir to divorce Rivka: "a barren woman is no woman." Rivka's sister, Malka, is in love with Yakov, a Jew shunned by the yeshiva as too secular. The rabbi arranges Malka's marriage to Yossef, whose agitation when fulfilling religious duties approaches the grotesque. Can the sisters sort out their hearts' desires within this patriarchal world? If not, have they any other options?

Perhaps another example of a film being completely beyond my comprehension being a goy. I didn't enjoy it.

Well, how can movies about love in the Orthodox world not be sad? A good portrait of life in the Jewish Orthodox community, if one is not familiar with it, they can treat it as a semi-documentary.

I would have liked this movie more if there was less to watch. The story is good as it takes a look at Haredi life (howbeit a slice). The pacing was off from the start. Some scenes went on way too long. But I did like how the movie demonstrated tradition was valued more than what Torah says. All I could think of were the words of Jesus as he tells the religious leaders, "Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition." I understood what frustrated him. Very gritty and almost pornographic. I say almost because the dialog provided enough sex talk to substitute for pictures. Skip it if you are squeamish with graphic talk about sex. Also,there's one rape scene. You can learn about Orthodox Jewish living in Israel in better films.
