Kaboom (2010)

Smith, a typical young college student who likes partying and engaging in acts of random sex and debauchery, has been having some interesting dreams revolving around two gorgeous women -- and is shocked when he meets the dream girls in real life. Lorelei looks just like his fantasy brunette, while a mysterious red-haired girl being chased by assassins draws him into an international conspiracy. Or is it all just a drug-induced hallucination?

A really unusual film, deliciously off the edge and weird in all the right ways! Very refreshing! The only let down for this movie was the fact that it ended prematurely in my opinion, or it'd get 5/5 from me. Still, that was uniquely kookie fun that's well worth the watch! I've been following a daily 'watch a movie you'd never normally watch' challenge, and this is without a doubt the best surprise of the bunch for me so far. Now I really must go look up more of Gregg Araki's work!

The one thing you need to know before viewing "Kaboom" is that writer/director Gregg Araki is a pop artist. He is not always concerned with narrative cinema and neither should you when watching his work. "Kaboom" is a kinetic, funny and involving pop spectacle. The plot (a return to his 'teenage apocalypse' formate from the 90s) is jumpy, interesting and meaningless all at once. "Kaboom" has some fun, beautiful looking actors in a fun, beautiful looking movie. Expect to be disorientated, turned on and turned around because that's what Araki is best at- images, sex and angst.

The title says it all, you will be Kaboom-ed by this movie. :-D As a summary I can say this movie is a joke, a brilliantly directed and played joke. Plus we have some funny sex and a bit of mystery, music and effects. This movie makes you smile a lot and it's not boring at all (some people criticized the repetitions of scenes, but I don't think it's a problem, nor the scenario, nor the end). Scenes are crude (being a habit for araki) but do serve the aims of the movie a lot. Definitely the movie of the fall (inception being the movie of the summer), but well fall is far from being finished and I am still waiting for Biutiful that I suspect to be a beast. Now I am going to watch more movies from Araki, then I can make a more pertinent critic.

Araki renoue avec le style barre et colore de ses premiers films et offre une histoire abracadabrantesque entre polar de science-fiction et etudes de moeurs porno-chic. Decale, visuellement excitant et completement jubilatoire.

A horror, mystery, sci-fi, bi-sexual comedy that follows college student Smith (Thomas Dekker) on a strange journey to find a red-headed stranger. It's a mind trip of a ride whose story is as straight as the main characters (which means there are a lot of twists and turns for subtlety challenged). Great performances from Haley Bennett and the adorable Juno Temple make this a must see for those that like movies that leave you guessing.
