For true Kaurismakian austerity, the film to see is the singular Juha, which dispenses with dialogue altogether.

Den Film zu beschreiben ist nicht ganz einfach, "Heidi" meets "Taxi driver" meets "Sunrise" (1927) trifft es vielleicht ganz gut. Mir hat dieser finnische Stummfilm aus dem Jahre 1999 aber ziemlich gut gefallen. Die Bilder sind schön, die Musik super und auch die Hauptdarstellerin macht ihre Sache gut, die anderen Darsteller können ihren Rollen kein Leben einverleiben, es ist eben nicht ganz einfach in einem Stummfilm eine eindrucksvolle Darbiertung abzugeben, ganz und gar nicht. Dass die Geschichte auch nicht die innovativste ist, soll an dieser Stelle auch noch erwähnt werden. Gefallen hat mir der Film dennoch, "Juha" steht für 75 Minuten gute Unterhaltung, aber nicht für viel mehr. 3/5

A wonderful and tragic tribute to Griffiths and the rest of the silent film era. Kaurismaki is also sure to include cheeky references to film history (ex. the Bunuel poster on the wall). The subject matter is appropriate to the genre, as well as many of the technical aspects (ex. acting, lighting, etc.).
