Interesting film that makes a strong statement about London on the verge of collapse due to reckless youth rebelling against society in the form of punks while at the same time condemning the punk culture for being careless and loud.

A pretentious mish-mash that is rather dated. Fast forwarded through most of it. Not worth the bother.

I was about 12 when i first saw this and not surprisingly it went right over my miniscule head. Now i'm all grown up i understand it all (a little) better. It is pretty fucking pretentious in places, but it reminded me quite a bit of one of the stranger early episodes of 'The Comic Strip Presents' as it has that same sort of avant-garde humour/style and look about it. I bought it on both DVD and pre-cert VHS recently. I prefered it on the pre cert video. (Hey, perhaps i'm just as pretentious as this film is!) It still retains it's nastiness and the character Borgia Ginz is still very creepy. Toyah Wilcox is the best thing abvout this film though and steals the show! (Although i am a HUGE fan of the original Adam & The Ants (who also appear)).

i was three when this was made and only just remember the 'real' Silver Jubilee parade in our viallge. I think was only 13 when i saw this [definately too young anyway] and it has stayed with me ever since. It has aged as well as any piece of punk has considering it was made on a shoestring and nearly everyone in it can't act for toffee. Should be essential viewing, but it is sadly slowwing slipping off into history and probably only watched my media-students :-( . What happens, what's it all about? nothing nowhere & boredom. natch!

A truly anarchic deconstruction of bourgeois values and society--a punk/new wave battle cry against the establishment. Jarman artfully combines musical performances with an almost post-apocalyptic narrative to explore the underside of British society. To enact his critique, the film has Ariel (the spirit from Shakespeare's The Tempest) transport the original Queen Elizabeth from her own 16th Century time into a bombed out/punked out British wasteland, a civilization that has been taken apart at the seams by anarchist punks like the main characters of the film. LIke a Burroughs or Ballard novel, Jubilee functions most cohesively as a series of tableaux, and like those authors its power can be drained at times because it gets a bit repetitive in its anarchic mise-en-scene, yet it is still a powerful piece of cinematic expression that shouts in the face of all those who consider themselves to be "decent people."
