"Jack Goes Boating" starring and directed by Philip Seymour Hoffman quietly sneaks up on you. I wasn't sure what to make of it at first. By the end I found myself quite taken by it.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman not only stars, but also directs this strong, character driven dramedy. There are some harsh truths about relationships throughout this story, but also some helpful doses of hope. 'Jack Goes Boating' is a strong indie that borders on excellence.

A most excellent directorial debut for Philip Seymour Hoffman. An awkward feel-good story (as only PSH is capable of playing) about an incredibly awkward guy in awkward relationships learning to overcome the challenges he faces.

Jack Goes Boating is an impressive display of Hoffman's work. As an actor, and director, Hoffman always recognized the power of restraint to create a memorable impression - albeit, in this case, not one that leaves behind an indelible trace.

Hoffman shows a talent for directing fellow actors and bringing out some emotional performances, even in some slightly stagy scenes. Hoffman and Ryan are delightfully awkward and sweet together, and their story in contrast to Ortiz and Rubin-Vega's relationship is a painfully funny tale to watch. The soundtrack is delightful as well, with just the right tone, it doesn't feel trendy or hip, because it fits. One of the more surprisingly charming efforts I've seen this year.
